Overview

Microsoft Copilot is less a single chatbot than a layer of AI spread across Microsoft's empire: Windows, Bing, Edge, and above all the Office apps. In Word it drafts, in Excel it analyzes, in Teams it summarizes the meeting you missed, and in Outlook it triages the inbox.

Under the hood it leans on frontier models, wrapped in Microsoft's enterprise-grade security and compliance posture.

What it is great at

The integration is the entire pitch, and it delivers. Turning a rough outline into a formatted deck, pulling a summary from a two-hour Teams call, or writing an Excel formula in plain English are the moments where Copilot earns its keep. For organizations already on Microsoft 365, adoption is close to frictionless.

Where it falls short

The transformative features sit inside the $30/user enterprise SKU, which adds up fast. The consumer-facing Copilot has been rebranded and restructured many times, and as a standalone chat experience it can feel derivative next to the specialists.

Pros & cons

What we like

  • Native inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
  • Backed by frontier models with enterprise security
  • Strong free experience built into Windows
  • Excellent for meeting recaps and document drafting at work

What could be better

  • The best features are locked behind pricey enterprise licensing
  • Consumer Copilot has changed identity several times
  • Can feel like a wrapper rather than a distinct assistant

The verdict

8.9/ 10

For Microsoft-shop workflows it is unbeatable on convenience; for everyone else it is a solid, familiar assistant.
