Claude
The thoughtful writer and coder that developers keep switching to.
Overview
Claude, from Anthropic, has become the favorite of people who write and code for a living. It trades a little of ChatGPT's feature sprawl for a higher standard of prose and reasoning, and a calmer personality that tends to say "here is the tradeoff" rather than bluffing.
Its massive context window, up to a million tokens on higher tiers, means you can drop an entire codebase, a legal contract, or a novel manuscript into a single conversation and hold a coherent discussion.
What it is great at
Writing is Claude's signature. Drafts come out with structure, rhythm, and an ear for register that other models approximate without matching. Coding is the other pillar: Claude Code and the Artifacts feature turn it into a genuine pair programmer, and it has become the engine behind a growing slice of professional developer tooling.
Extended thinking mode lets it reason step by step on hard problems, and the results on analysis-heavy tasks are strong.
Where it falls short
There is no built-in image generation, and its web access is narrower than the Google or OpenAI offerings. Its carefulness, a virtue in most cases, can read as hedging when you want a decisive answer.
Pros & cons
What we like
- Considered the best writer of the major models
- Elite coding that powers a serious developer following
- Huge context window handles whole books and codebases
- Careful, low-drama tone that avoids over-claiming
What could be better
- No native image generation
- Web browsing is more limited than ChatGPT or Gemini
- Can be cautious to the point of hedging
The verdict
If your work lives in words and code, Claude is the connoisseur's pick, and the free tier is enough to fall for it.
